Sally Herman is a retired choral director who’s teaching experience included all levels of the education spectrum. While teaching at the Fox school district in Missouri, she taught adjunct at Washington University in St. Louis and became a full-time faculty member at the University of Missouri-St. Louis after teaching thirty-two years in public school.
Sally was a frequently sought clinician, conductor and lecturer for regional, district, state, and national conventions. She has conducted many festival and allstate choirs throughout the United States as well as ACDA divisional and national honor choirs. Her summers were spent teaching graduate courses, workshops at various universities including Eastman School of Music, as well as church music workshops. She served on both the ACDA nominating committee for the slate of officers and the adjudicating panel to select graduate student conductors to appear at ACDA national conventions. Sally has studied with many outstanding conductors such as Helmuth Rilling when she sang in the Oregon Bach Chorale.
Choral ensembles at Fox under her direction have performed frequently at Missouri Music Educator’s state conventions, ACDA divisional conventions, and ACDA and MENC national conventions. Her choirs have consistently won first place and top ratings in contests and festivals.
Mrs. Herman has been honored with many awards of distinction including the prestigious “Luther T. Spayde” award presented by the Missouri ACDA for outstanding contribution to the choral art. She was the first recipient of the Missouri ACDA “Podium Award” for consistent excellence of performance by choral ensembles. She has been honored in the St. Louis area several times as an outstanding educator and was selected as the outstanding faculty member the first year she taught at Fox High School. She also has been chosen several times for “Who’s Who Among Outstanding Educators.” In addition, she has been placed in her high school alma mater “Hall of Fame.”
Sally Herman is a composer with several published compositions and editions. She has also written two books which have been used as collegiate textbooks and articles for the “Choral Journal” and the “MENC Journal.”
Sally Herman is Managing Director of Talent Spotlight. Having been involved both in college recruitment and an advisor to high school students who wanted to be involved in music at the collegiate level, she not only understands the tremendous opportunity this service can offer at both levels, but foresees it becoming a very valuable tool, one that she admittedly would loved to have had at her disposal during her teaching career.
